Focus on the Trinity (15 June)
This week is our opportunity to celebrate the Trinity. This follows hot on the heels (pardon the pun) of the coming of the Spirit. I spoke last week about the challenge of discerning the Spirit. In Ignatian terms there is Good Spirit that leads to life and Bad Spirit that leads us away from God. Today we celebrate the wonder, the mystery of God that is three persons in one. Equal partners that engage with each other in an outpouring relationship. We are recipients of that outpouring and the task of our spiritual life is to seek connection with the Trinitarian God.
Probably the most famous representation of the Trinity is Andrei Rublev’s icon from the early fifteenth Century. The icon represents spiritual unity, peace, harmony, mutual love and humility. There is endless writing about the meaning of this well-known image. However, for me, an explanation shared by a fellow student in a sermon at Trinity theological school endures. She emphasised the triangular shape created by the seated figures. In this open space rests the cup of salvation, the ultimate image of hospitality. The preacher explained that the open space is for each of us. Can you imagine yourself in that image?
With love and blessings,
Linda
